We all fantasise about being our own boss. Coffee shop in the morning, settling down to a late morning brunch, then casually flicking open the laptop around 1 o’clock. You do a solid hour of work, quick nip into Nandos for lunch, then smash out an afternoon siesta after watching “A Place In The Sun”. Before you know it, you’re sipping single malt, casually discerning who you’d like to grace with your services, as waves of overwhelming candidate job offers pour into your inbox.

Yeah right!

Unfortunately, that’s not how entrepreneurship works. After almost 20 years of supporting hundreds of independent recruiters, we like to think about what life is really like.

But how do you know when you’re ready?

Well, it really depends on timely circumstances and only you will know when it’s time to push the button. Some typical and unmistakable warning signs that many of our partners have realised over the years were this:

You’re dedicated

You’ve put the hard yards in, earned your stripes and you still love what you do.  Congratulations, you’re sitting pretty.

However, things just don’t feel right? …..You yearn for more……Everyone knows the importance of being passionate shapes the basis for your start-up venture. The fact that you’re a notoriously dedicated, ‘body on the line’ kind of person will be a tell-tale sign that you possess the right mindset to go all in.

Then, it might be the case that once you begin to properly monetise what you love doing it could become more about making money and less about the purer aspects that made you fall in love with it.

You’ve Hit Milestones

There comes a point in any recruiter’s journey when you start to wonder if there is any real value to your work. After doing some research on the different routes out there, our clients often feel that SSG is a great platform for them to get the type of support they’re looking for, giving them the platform and scope to provide real worth to themselves, their career and chosen market.

It can be quite daunting when you think about sharing your plans with people who don’t appear to understand your ambitions. Let’s not forget all the preparation you need to get done and how you are going to make the business profitable. Putting yourself out there at first can be a hurdle but when you know, you know.

You Believe in Yourself

When this comes from a self-help guru it can sound inauthentic. When it comes from a self-made entrepreneur, you’ve got to at least give this catchphrase some thought.

Some clients still would have made the transition. It just may have taken a little longer but through their own admission, are not entirely confident they would be where they are now.

The whole SSG experience provided them with opportunities, answers and clear direction but it is they who should take the credit for their success because if it wasn’t for them believing in themselves, they wouldn’t be where they are now.

You’ve Identified Your Weaknesses

If you are about to launch a business, knowing your limits is essential. For many, one challenge is getting their head around the business side of things.

You can make business development calls and speak to candidates until the cows come home, but if you’re not marketing yourself correctly and running the business side of things efficiently then, unfortunately, people won’t know who you or your services are. As importantly, the business will stand a less chance of being profitable in the attempt to do everything.

Play to your strengths and outsource your weakness.

You’re Willing To Learn New Skills

Most entrepreneurs and motivated professionals know the importance of investing in themselves i.e. building valuable skills and improving their strengths over time. Before you start your business, you will have made your business-related plans for what you want to accomplish in 2022 and beyond.

Your new roadmaps will no doubt include growth targets, potential new markets to enter, events to participate in and relationships to build. If you have these types of clear targets and milestones built into your plan for the year, that’s a great start.

However, it’s equally important to set skill-building goals that’ll ultimately help you become more successful in your business. Whether it’s setting aside time to improve on your weaknesses or leaning on your support network to help you with one of your strengths, investing in your skills is never a bad move. If you recognise this early on, then you’re on to a winner.

I feel that question comes down to the amount of determination you have, to succeed.

If you want it badly enough then one way or another you will find a way to make it happen and only you will know when the time is right to pull the trigger.
