If you are thinking about starting your own recruitment business you will be all too familiar with the thoughts that creep in that justify delaying taking the plunge. From feeling that you don’t have enough experience, that now is not the right time or perhaps you are waiting for a big commission pay out to help set you up.

As humans when we are faced with the unknown, we are experts at talking ourselves out of things and even convincing ourselves that our current situation is not that bad. But if you have an ambition to be your own boss, chances are you are ready to make the change.

So, just how much experience should a recruiter have behind them before going solo? 2 years, 5 years, 10+ years? Let’s take a look at the markers that you are in a good position to launch your own recruitment business including how much experience you really need.

Do you have enough experience?

As a good rule of thumb, it’s advisable to have at least 3-5 years of experience in the recruitment industry before setting up your own recruitment company. It is felt that this is enough time for any recruiter to have first-hand experience with the many twists and turns the recruitment process can take.

It is thought that during 3-5 years of working for someone else, you will likely have dealt with a wealth of scenarios both client and candidate side to prepare you for running your own business. While it is really up to you when you go solo, having at least 3 years under your belt can help you avoid any nasty surprises as your own boss.

Strong knowledge of the sector

Having a strong understanding of the recruitment sector comes with time and experience, but it is one the most important factors when it comes to launching your recruitment business. As with any business, you must understand your market and doing so will help you to identify gaps within it to help you find your position.

Keeping up to date with the latest developments, news and trends in the recruitment industry can be a marker that you are ready for the next step in your journey.

Consistent billings

The more experience you have the better idea you can get of your potential revenue. If you have a consistent track record of making good billings, then it could be time for you to go it alone. Already billing amounts that could provide a healthy income for your future business gives you the confidence that you could be successful in your new venture.

If you can close deals at your current agency, then there is no reason you can’t close them in your new one, and remember when you work for yourself everything you bill is for your business so you will have the funds to reinvest in the business, expand your team or increase your income.

Burning ambition

If running your own recruitment business is all you can think about then you’re ready. While every recruiter’s motivations differ, their ambition is usually consistent. Some are motivated by being in control of their future and time, while others want to do it for the financial benefits and others want to build a business they can sell further down the line to enable them to retire.

Many recruiters will have a passing thought of “why don’t I start up my own business” but only those with the strongest ambition will take the plunge to become a successful recruitment business owner.
